Anti Ageing
Compound your routine with our The Full Compound Effect
What causes skin ageing?
Skin ages in two ways. Natural ageing is driven by time and genes: from the mid-20s the skin makes less collagen every year, cell turnover slows and skin holds less moisture. External ageing comes from the world around you, and it is the part you can control.
- Sun exposure: the biggest external cause. UV breaks down collagen and causes lines, sagging and age spots.
- Pollution and smoking: create free radicals that damage collagen and dull the skin.
- Sugar and poor sleep: sugar stiffens collagen fibres; poor sleep slows skin repair.
- Stress: raises cortisol, which can thin skin and slow healing.
- Harsh skincare: over-exfoliating and stripping the barrier make skin look older, not younger.
Early signs of ageing skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles: first around the eyes, forehead and smile lines.
- Dullness: slower cell turnover leaves skin looking tired.
- Uneven tone and age spots: sun damage shows up as patches and dark spots. See our pigmentation guide.
- Loss of firmness: cheeks and jawline lose their bounce as collagen drops.
- Rougher texture and dryness: skin holds less water and repairs more slowly.
Anti ageing skincare by age
| Age | What is changing | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| 20s | Collagen begins to decline; sun damage builds up quietly | Daily sunscreen, an antioxidant serum, a good moisturiser |
| 30s | First fine lines, dullness, uneven tone | Add gentle exfoliation for cell turnover; keep antioxidants and SPF |
| 40s | Deeper lines, loss of firmness, age spots | Add a retinoid (with a dermatologist's guidance), barrier support, targeted spot care |
| 50s and beyond | Drier, thinner skin; hormonal changes after menopause | Richer hydration, barrier repair, consistent SPF, gentle actives |
The best age to start anti ageing skincare is your mid-20s, beginning with sunscreen. Starting later still helps: skin responds to good care at every age.
Anti ageing ingredients that actually work
| Ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|
| Broad-spectrum sunscreen | Prevents the UV damage behind most visible ageing |
| Vitamin C | Antioxidant that supports collagen and brightens dull skin |
| Niacinamide | Strengthens the barrier, evens tone and softens the look of fine lines |
| Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) | Speed up cell turnover and boost collagen; start slowly |
| AHAs (glycolic acid) | Exfoliate dull surface cells for smoother texture |
| Ceramides and hyaluronic acid | Hold moisture and keep the skin barrier strong |
| Peptides | Support firmness as part of a full routine |
Anti aging cream, serum or night cream: which do you need?
A serum delivers concentrated actives, such as vitamin C or niacinamide, in a light layer. An anti aging cream or moisturiser seals in hydration and supports the barrier. A night cream is simply richer, used when skin repairs itself. Most people need a serum plus a moisturiser, and sunscreen every morning, more than any single "miracle" cream.
The problem: why most anti ageing creams disappoint
- No sunscreen: without daily SPF, sun damage outpaces any cream.
- Too many actives at once: layering strong products irritates skin and speeds up visible ageing.
- Expecting overnight results: collagen changes take at least 12 weeks to show.
- Starting too late: prevention in your 20s and 30s does more than correction in your 50s.
The solution: The Compound Way approach to ageing skin
The Compound Way is a dermatologist-formulated skincare brand founded by Dr. Garekar. We do not sell miracle anti ageing creams. Our routine covers the three things that measurably slow skin ageing: protection, antioxidants and controlled cell turnover.
